IBM wields MPEG-2 in TV-studio push
By

Fishkill, N.Y. - IBM Microelectronics today will tip a move to dominate the digital TV studio of the future , launching a salvo of professional-grade single-chip MPEG-2 encoders against rival C-Cube Microsystems. The chips are intended to meet the need for frequent MPEG-2 encoding at varying quality levels as video material is prepared in

the TV production studio (see related story, page 1)

The new family of encoders includes two that produce the very high-image-quality MPEG-2 4:2:2 profile. One of those chips employs extended motion estimation search range and features, allowing compression beyond the requirements of MPEG-2 Main Level. The chips are designed for use in video-production shops, where images will undergo multiple decodings and re-encodings and must be maintained at higher-than-broadcast quality.

A third encoder, producing MPEG-2 Main Profile @ Main Level, is intended for DVD authoring or broadcast bit-stream generation, for which maximum image quality is not vital. A fourth chip encodes MPEG-2 I-frames.

All of the chips are slated to be in production by midyear.

Like your tactics, they seem awfully familiar. ;-)

You really should tell the thread where those cautionary statements came from Alex, so others can judge all the information for themselves, not just that you choose to post.
