In DWDM lingo, a system is either "passive" or "active" based on its internal components. Active systems incorporate expensive devices like erbium doped fiber amps (EDFA) which require a system to be "powered up." Osicom's GigaMux is able to offer their GigaMux at a much lower price because it bypasses these EDFAs which are not required for short distance applications (< 120km).

From a recent article regarding the GigaMux, Mr True said:
"By being a passive system, there's absolutely no power going into it, which makes it immune to power fluctuations and such things as temperature instabilities. Bottom line, the passive design results in an unprecedented meantime between failures (MTBF)."

The Dr. was complementing the system, not criticizing it. Many of the short haul players and future entrants are trying to modify active based long haul technology to meet the needs of the short haul market. Because of the benefits of the passive architecture, Osicom's GigaMux has an advantage. On the other hand, if the customer desires further signal amplification, an amplifier can be added to the GigaMux.
