John -- AVAL definitely is a strange trader. If I hadn't been involved with it for a long time personally, on both sides of the market and through several MMs, I'd be having a tough time figuring out what's going on. The bottom line is that most of the float is tied up in the hands of a few (which is NOT to say that someone couldn't flush 100,000 shares down the market at any time), and most or all of the MMs have no inventory... hence the ridiculous spread. It sure will be interesting to see what happens if the long-awaited news ever shows up. At some price point, obviously, some of those shares will start coming into the market, and then the stock may start trading more normally.
