This was written in February by Andy Smith, of UBS, a noted Gold Bear. He always lathers up his research message with what he perceives to be literary or philosophical wisdoms(I perceive it to be literary and philosophical bullshit meant to impress a reader as to to his reach and depth of worldliness.)

THE FLAT EARTH SOCIETY

"I like to keep a bottle of stimulant handy in case I see a snake, which I also keep handy"
WC Fields

Anti-globalisation is on the march. Watch out! Adam Smith's Invisible Hand has created a Frankenstein monster, now run amok in Asia. Smoke filled rooms of `reasonable' men - a Credit Insurance Corporation (George Soros) or a Board of Overseers of Major Institutions and Markets (Henry Kaufman) - are to be preferred to the fresh air of frenzied free markets. "Xenophobia in Europe and Islamic fundamentalism" may follow, warns UNCTAD, if the free market beast is left unchained. "People first: the world economy needs regulation" advocates William Pfaff in the Herald Tribune. Stop the capital flows, I want to get off.

Forget for a moment that many of these siren voices betray the characteristics of those whom David Jacobs (in `The Threat') believes have been kidnapped by aliens, ie they have been subjected to "instilled memories"..."a multitude of images: atomic explosions, meteorites striking Earth, the world cracking in half, environmental degredation..." And gloss over the suspicion that the shelf life of big investment ideas is shrinking in inverse proportion to the self-evident capacity of `the system' to right itself; Apocalypse is all that's left a guru to look forward to.

Snake oil though it is (as WC Fields would recognise), the clarion call for capital controls - in threatening to expose savers again to the whim of national governments, like rats in a barrel exposed to a shotgun - should strike a bullish chord in every gold watcher's heart.
