'OPC is rapidly becoming the de facto industry standard interface. This is relevant for the TAVA/WNDR alliance. John __________________________ Monday, March 23, 1998 OPC member companies deliver more than 50 new OPC-based products. The OLE for Process Control (OPC) Foundation, Austin, Texas, announced that a large number of its 120 members worldwide are currently shipping 50 new OPC-based products, which provide manufacturers increased application interoperability. Based on Microsoft Component Object Model (COM) and ActiveX technologies, these products make it easy to exchange realtime information between disparate automation devices, systems and applications running across the manufacturing enterprise. Don Holley, OPC Foundation marketing chairperson and National Instruments industrial automation marketing manager, said, "It's exciting to see so many new OPC products available from automation companies around the world. OPC is rapidly becoming the de facto industry standard interface. "A single standard means that automation suppliers can eliminate unnecessary development effort because they no longer need to write custom drivers for proprietary devices. This allows suppliers to apply additional R&D investment into new product features where it adds the most value for the end-user customer." Marcus Schmidt, manufacturing industry marketing manager at Microsoft, said, "No other standards organization has been able to produce tangible results such as these. Few other standards efforts can claim that they have actually delivered a specification and have companies around the world building and shipping products based on the specification. OPC has proven to be a resource that developers can successfully use to provide real manufacturing solutions today."startmag.com
