Bob,

<zero competitors on the mainstream desktop>

Not quite zero....some people still prefer and use OS/2. I know several people both at home and work who choose to use OS/2. While OS/2 users are admittedly a very small percentage of the total PC population, they are not "zero".

Robert, >>>Mary,RE:$24.7B...That's approximately what they did in sales last year for the whole business. I don't think you should expect them to do that much in sales on 65% of their unit sales. Maybe some years down the road.<<<

Do you really think it will take them several years to have 65% of their (high end) unit sales achieve 75/80% of their total revenues? Have you given this any real thought?

Mary

Bob,>>>RE:Microsoft and P/E....They have a negligible marginal cost of production and zero competitors on the mainstream desktop(Apple and Linux don't count).<<<

Are programming, marketing, sales, distribution, and customer service expense completely R&D? You got me there, when it comes to accounting - I haven't a clue.

But I think I understand competition a little better. Would Apple, IBM, SUNW, and Linux be less serious as competitors to Mister Softee (MSFT) than AMD, NSM, and IDTI is to Intel(Mister Tough Guy)?

On the other hand aren't Intuit, Novel, Oracle, Corel, Netscape, Broderbund, and thousands of other software companies also competitors? How much (either in total or percentage) are MSFT revenues are in this part of the software market?

And who might other Intel competitors be in significant portions of their revenue stream?

Mary
