Nortel (Northern Telecom) Innovation Offers More than 100 Percent Capacity Increase

(though I guess this isn't new, I was wondering if this wrinkle had been factored into the CDMA vs. GSM capacity discussion, or if it merely had more to do w/frequency or bandwidth constraints than anything else -t)

Irish GSM Operator ESAT Digifone Benefits from Fractional Re-Use

DUBLIN, Ireland, March 26 /PRNewswire/ - GSM operators can increase the capacity of existing networks by more than 100 percent with no additional radio sites using unique fractional re-use technology from Nortel (Northern Telecom).

Now in commercial service in Ireland with Esat Digifone, Nortel's 1(x)1 fractional re-use technology has proven to dramatically increase network capacity while maintaining high-quality service and providing optimal engineering flexibility. It also saves operators substantial investments in additional base stations.

This has been particularly important to Digifone, which captured 38 percent of the Irish GSM market in its first nine months in commercial service using a comprehensive network solution from Nortel.

Using fractional re-use technology to bring forward its expansion plans, Digifone has removed the capacity constraints of limited radio spectrum - in this case, 7.4 MHz - faced by many GSM operators in Europe.

''Our tremendous commercial success has from the start been based on quality offerings in both voice services and customer support, while at the same time providing real value for our customers' money,'' said Paul Craig, technical director, Esat Digifone.

''With Nortel's support in deploying fractional re-use technology in record time, we've been able to keep our performance promises while continuing to welcome new subscribers to our network,'' Craig said.

Nortel GSM fractional re-use technology uses reduced patterns (1(x)1 or 1(x)3) to increase frequency re-use, allowing more calls to be made in less spectrum. The technology relies in particular on synthesized frequency hopping for excellent voice quality.

The fractional re-use solution for the capital city of Dublin and the surrounding region was engineered and deployed in only six weeks. Switching the network from its previous configuration to the new solution was accomplished overnight, minimizing the impact on customer service.

In addition to providing a cost-effective solution for immediate capacity growth, fractional re-use preserves for Digifone and other GSM operators the ability to add radio transceivers - with no changes in frequency planning - for even greater capacity as subscriber growth dictates.

Pioneered by Nortel, 1(x)1 and 1(x)3 fractional re-use technology has proven effective in Nortel GSM networks for more than three years. Recent commercial deployments include Esat Digifone and France Telecom [NYSE:FTE - news] Mobiles, which now uses this technology with its Itineris GSM service in Cannes and Nice.

Esat Digifone is an Irish company 45 percent owned by Esat Telecom Holdings and 45 percent owned by Norwegian operator Telenor. The remaining 10 percent is held by IIU Nominees Limited.

Nortel had 1997 revenues of $US 15.5 billion and has approximately 73,000 employees worldwide.
