Good observation.

My take is that retail store information is more or less readily available and analysts, quite limited in their "investigative" ability, focus on the easily available data.

A good example is the recent report of AMD owning 40% or 60% of the "retail" market! At about 2,000,000 K6's per quarter, that computes to a retail market of only 4 or 6 million per quarter - neglecting the remaining 15 or 18 million "commercial" PC sales.
