The IBD story was on SCM Microsystems Inc. titled "Firm banks on smart-card boom in U.S." -Frost & Sullivan expects almost 1.7 billion smart cards to be shipped worldwide in 2000, up from 254 million in '93 and 836 million last year. -Most attractive to organizations like Visa and Mastercard is the extra security layer added by the cards' intelligence. "In Europe they've really reduced the amount of credit-card fraud by using these technologies," said analyst Jonathan Cassell of Dataquest Inc.
