If the company is being looked at for a potential takeover, I can see why. The rights to their pictures are highly valued and are demanding significant dollars just for the rights to either use, make sequels, mention the name, etc. But in the United States, the owner generally has first rights. I am not a lawyer and I don't know where Carolco stands in the pending receivership process. How ever I can surmise, what it might be worth to another company to have first say in any and everything that a company has rights to by owning the company.

For instance, Dimension Films an arm of Miramax thinks that the companies films are money makers and made an investment in a film we all probably saw once or twice, just to absorb everything that was presented in that movie. Below is a tidbit of information on Miramax efforts to get the rights to Carolco film "Total Recall". Who knows, they may also be in the bidding for the company and we may see two dollars offered for the shell.

"Arnold Schwarzenegger's science-fiction hit Total Recall will be back. Whether the muscular action star will be back with it remains to be seen. Sequel, prequel and remake film rights to Total Recall were purchased from Carolco Pictures. Dimension Films, an arm of Miramax, paid $3.15 million. "This is the perfect franchise opportunity for Dimension," said Miramax chief Bob Weinstein, who said he plans to contact the film's original cast for a follow-up to the 1990 film. Schwarzenegger has said he would like to do a sequel. Other original cast members include Sharon Stone. Total Recall earned $260 million worldwide for Carolco. "

Well lets see if this puppy can come back and hold .01 or .017 for a while. I could just buy lottery tickets, but the drama would end to quickly.
