Stitch,

"What were these famous Asian values? Strong family structures, a Confucian education system and hard work . . . Those aren't Asian values, those are universal values," he said............

But Asian values - a much over-used phrase - was really a smokescreen for something else. And it must not be allowed to come back."

Mr. Holbrooke yesterday rejected the concept of Asian values, saying the notion had been used as a front to conceal dubious business practices which had contributed to the regional crisis.

Th notion of "Asia value" has been used to discredit the Asian people in general is a very troublesome wording. Just because some country corrupted leaders, government officials, or some business practices had done something wrong to cause the crisis, it does not mean the "Asian" has to take the blame. There are other Asian countries do just as good or better under Asian Crisis. Such as Taiwan and Singapore. Are we going to say that Asia value is not good in those countries?

Frankly, I do not know what "Asia Value" means either. I, as a new citizen of US, do not know I am an Asian until I am classified as an Asian by the INS, the mass media, etc. At least I am not told as an "Oriental". I heard that is a discriminatory word againt someone from "that part of the world". Am I happy to be called an Asian? I do not know the concept because "English" is not my native language.

Now "Mr. Holbrook rejects "Asian Value" as if "Asian" in general are bad? Or when "American beats Michelle Kwan" title by MSNBC while Ms. Kwan is a US born American during the Winter Olimpic Game represents careless mistakes by the mass media and the previous US government officer?

Brian H.

The Asian values discussion brings up a very strange image to my mind. Hollywood Action Movie, circa 1999. The last year of the mellenium. The hero is British, the villain American, the female lead from Hong Kong, the Director is Indian, the cast is for the most part Mexican. The producer is an Israeli. The owner of the film company is an ex-Austrailan. The head of sales is an ex-New Yorker Schmemmmen, who is actually greek.

Where does this leave Asian values? Or, French values? Or, even American values? Maybe we are in the world of world commerical values....

My best,
