yes, utility companies would definitely have to cooperate with such a project; but why wouldn't they? this is made all the more interesting here in california by the competitive electrical utility market.

i have heard of x-10, but had never thought of it as data over electrical wire; i guess it is. i've also seen a device that claims to "create" additional phone jacks in your home over the electrical wiring. also, an nt press release said that power companies already send their own internal monitoring info over the lines.

you know, back in the old days, in the west and midwest, ranching communities sometimes set up local "telephone" networks using their barbed-wire fences. it was a party line, had poor sound quality, and had to have a battery-powered device every x yards as a "repeater"... fascinating stuff. i wonder whether power lines can provide a similar cheap telephony in the third world, in places that have electricity but no phone infrastructure? perhaps even competition with the pbx's here in the us?

the technology's ultimate use needn't be megabit/second home internet access. the point is, we have miles of cable strung up all over the world, and imho, anyone who can patent a way to use it for info transmission is gonna make a killing.

wonder if lucent or tellabs have any products in this category?
