Sybase Software Selected as Remote Computing Solution for
Nation's Largest Tax Preparer

EMERYVILLE, Calif., March 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Sybase, Inc. (Nasdaq: SYBS)
announced today that H&R Block, the country's largest tax preparation service,
will deploy a Sybase software solution to 4,500 of its tax offices. The new
system, to be rolled out beginning with the 1999 tax season, is designed to
help the company collect, exchange and analyze financial data from tax offices
on a daily basis. In the highly competitive and dynamic financial services
marketplace, H&R Block understands the imperative of capturing and leveraging
financial information for business advantage and improved customer service.
"We wanted a technology solution that would grow along with our company," said
Jim Rose, chief information officer for H&R Block. "After a review of
numerous technologies available, we decided that Sybase offered the best
solution for our needs. Most appealing are the speed and virtually
administration-free nature of Sybase's mobile technology. The Sybase solution
also offers a replication strategy to populate a central data warehouse for
data analysis and storage."
"H&R Block's need to easily extend the reach of its enterprise by
accessing and delivering data to remote sites showcases an important, fast-
growing industry trend," said Terry Stepien, vice president and general
manager of the Workplace Database Division of Sybase. "Sybase sets the bar
for delivering an optimized, easy to administer technology solution for this
emerging market, letting remote customers focus on their business rather than
their underlying computing infrastructure."

The Sybase Information-Delivery Solution
The complete Sybase consolidated server and remote computing solution
includes Sybase's Adaptive Server(TM) Anywhere 6.0, the industry's leading
small-footprint database optimized for mobile computing; Adaptive Server(TM)
Enterprise 11.5, Sybase's flagship RDBMS; DirectConnect(TM), the market-
leading data access middleware; and Replication Server(R), data movement for
bi-directional replication. Sybase Professional Services will work with H&R
Block to implement this solution.
Adaptive Server Anywhere will be used at H&R Block's 4,500 branch offices.
Adaptive Server Enterprise will reside at H&R Block's World Headquarters,
providing H&R Block with on-line transaction processing (OLTP), replication
and Intranet reporting capabilities. Each night the district offices will
poll the tax offices and consolidate the data using the replication
capabilities of Adaptive Server Anywhere replicating the consolidated Adaptive
Server Enterprise server at H&R Block World Headquarters.
