DELL COMPUTER CORP is preparing to grab a large slice of the business in China and to move into direct selling there when the market is ready, senior officials said. "We are building a team and we should be shipping products there later this year. Initially we are shipping desktops, notebooks and servers. Over the next year, it will be a full range of products," Morton Topfer, Dell's vice chairman said. Known for its direct method of selling, Dell nonetheless has been marketing in China through a network of distributors. After many months of negotiation with Chinese authorities, it bought a 50,000 sq m piece of land and is opening a sales, manufacturing and customer centre in Xiamen in Fujian province. In a statement, the company said it ranked No. 3 in 1997 among makers of personal workstations, powerful technical computers running the Windows NT operating system. (Reuters 12:26 PM ET 03/30/98) For the full text story, see full story Dell Computer Corp (DELL) DELL COMPUTER CORP and WANG LABORATORIES INC said they launched a strategic partnership in Europe to provide services for Dell's business customers. In a joint statement Dell Europe, Middle East and Africa and Wang Global said the deal would allow customers to get better service once the computer hardware had been delivered. The companies said Wang Global had about 12,000 employees in its European operation, and Dell around 5,000. The companies gave no financial details. Dell Computer Corp said its European alliance with Wang Laboratories Inc should give a healthy boost to its market share. Craig Barrett came to Seoul to speak at a company seminar and give away some high-tech equipment, but spent much of his time fending off questions about possible investments in Samsung Electronics Co Ltd. "Intel is having many discussions with local companies in Korea and around the world," Barrett said in a news conference. "Those conversations are confidential until we have something to announce," he said. South Korean media have reported Intel and Samsung Electronics were discussing an investment by Intel of as much as $1 billion into the Korean firm. (Reuters 03:48 AM ET 03/30/98) For the full text story, see full story Microsoft Corporation (MSFT) M SYSTEMS FLASH DISK PIONEERS has signed a license agreement with MICROSOFT which calls for the inclusion of M-Systems' DiskOnChip and linear flash drivers in the Microsoft Windows CE operating system. No financial details were disclosed. In a press release Monday, M-Systems said Microsoft has agreed to help promote M-Systems' Flash Disk technology solutions. (Reuters 12:40 PM ET 03/30/98) For the full text story, see full story Microsoft Corporation (MSFT) COMPAQ COMPUTER CORP it started selling its new palmtop personal computer, the C-Series Handheld PC, in North America. Compaq said the device supported several exclusive software bundles as well as MICROSOFT CORP's Windows CE 2.0 operating system for consumer electronics. The C-Series Model 810, which has a monochrome display, is priced at $599. Features include an integrated modem with standard phone jack and a display that offers two levels of backlighting. The C-Series also offers encrypted multilevel password protection, automatic information backup and other features, Compaq said. (Reuters 02:45 PM ET 03/30/98) Oracle Corporation (ORCL) AMERICA ONLINE INC said it added new services and entered a series of partnerships aimed at broadening the offerings of its AOL Enterprise business-to-business online services unit. As part of the effort, AOL said it signed deals with IBM's Lotus Development software unit. AOL said it also entered deals with several companies to provide security software tools and services for the AOL Enterprise service, including SECURITY DYNAMICS TECHNOLOGIES INC, AXENT TECHNOLOGIES INC and CHECK POINT SOFTWARE. In addition, AOL said it reached a deal to provide network access and instant messaging for mobile employees and consultants at ORACLE CORP.
