i agree...AMZN is an over-hyped player in a commodity mkt.

how about the database market? Sybase and informix are clearly monkeys. Oracle is the gorilla, while Microsoft is a chimp. but what happens when the database market becomes inseparable from software and operating systems.

i would think that Microsoft's gorilla status in the software market makes ORCL a sitting duck. do you think that ORCL is a local gorilla, but now it is about to get wiped out by the larger software gorilla game?

I agree with you that AMZN isn't a gorilla as defined by the book. However, you don't understand AMZN if you simply call it a bookstore. Books are what it does right now but books are just step 1 in a multi-step strategy. Step 1 relates to mass-market acceptance of the internet/browser as an e*commerce platform. The next steps will be leveraging this platform to other products. Then advertising could contribute. AMZN's margins will be slim but the opportunity is very large. I would not be a big holder of AMZN at these prices but its worth paying attention to....

Do you think any of the Y2K players will be a gorilla?

I was checking out this one called FBN which has some pretty revolutionary technology. Didn't get much from the thread though. It's IPO day so everybody's talking about how it opened at 15 and now it's around 29 or 30
