Ciprico Introduces New Fibre Channel Storage Area Network Solution

SANity(TM) Delivers Fastest High-bandwidth I/O

MINNEAPOLIS, March 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Ciprico Inc. (Nasdaq: CPCI - news) today announced SANity, a new family of Fibre Channel Storage Area Network (SAN) solutions that eliminates the need for traditional file servers and allows users to transfer data at high-bandwidth across multiple platforms.

A SANity solution is based on SANity system software and incorporates Ciprico's 7000 Series Fibre Channel RAID disk arrays to offer high performance for demanding imaging applications such as film and video, broadcast, medical imaging, DoD/remote sensing, and the geosciences.

''As the first company to deliver full speed high-bandwidth Fibre Channel RAID, Ciprico has valuable insight into the needs of our customers. With this insight Ciprico creates new solutions, such as SANity, that meet the high- bandwidth data transfer needs of our customers. Through our experience, we know that traditional client-server networking paradigms interject bottlenecks that prohibit the efficient transfer of extremely large data sets, typical in visual computing applications,'' said Bill Moren, Senior Product Manager of SANity. ''SANity eliminates the bottlenecks by allowing client workstations to transfer data directly to the shared storage devices.''

SANity uses Fibre Channel technology for direct I/O operations. These occur at aggregate network rates scaleable to thousands of megabytes per second. This level of performance is nearly two orders of magnitude faster than the networks typically used in these markets today.

SANity Solutions

SANity is a family of Fibre Channel SAN solutions under development that will include support for popular workstations. Basic versions will support file-sharing in an NT/IRIX cross-platform environment at high speeds. Advanced versions will support additional features such as system level striping, guaranteed bandwidth management, additional platform support including Solaris, and a serverless network structure eliminating single points of failure. To ensure quick and quality installations, Ciprico offers optional on-site integration services.

7000 Series Fibre Channel RAID Disk Arrays

Ciprico's 7000 Series of RAID disk arrays supports sustained data transfer rates of over 90 MB/s across a full-speed Fibre Channel interface. 7000 Series disk arrays are available in 72 and 144 GB configurations. All 7000 Series disk arrays support hot-swap of failed drives and hot-swap redundant power supplies and cooling fans.

SANity System Software

SANity system software supports direct access of network attached storage. Direct access allows client workstations to transfer data at full Fibre Channel speeds. Included in the SANity package is system software that provides file system management supporting file-level sharing of data. SANity software operates in a heterogeneous environment with the initial version supporting NT/IRIX platforms.

Pricing and Availability

SANity will be available through Ciprico directly beginning in July of 1998. List pricing for SANity varies by user configuration.
