Brown Bros. Cuts Texas Instruments To Short-Term Avoid

NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--Brown Brothers Harriman & Co. cut its rating on Texas Instruments
Inc. (TXN) to short-term avoid from short-term hold, citing a continuing decline in prices of
memory chips.

Brown Brothers analyst William Milton said his long-term rating on Texas Instruments remains
market perform, but that 1998 looks like an "essentially flat year." He cut his 1998 earnings
estimate to $2 a share from $2.20 a share.

In addition to falling memory-chip prices, the company suffers from a 20% exposure to Japan,
where semiconductor demand is declining "at double digit rates," Milton said.
