Stocks end lower despite telecoms minister recovery

Sao Paulo, 30 - Despite the enthusiasm triggered by the return to Brazil of
telecommunications minister, S‚rgio Motta, the Sao Paulo stock exchange, Bovespa,
finished Friday's session lower. Its lackluster late trading was partly explained by the
Dow's plunging 35 points right before local bourses closing bell. The Ibovespa index
closed down 0.38% at 11,899 points (Ibovespa/US$ closed lower by 0.42% at
3,807 points). Trading volume was at US$595.226m with some 35.923bn shares
having changed hands. The Rio de Janeiro Stock Exchange Index (IBV-RJ) closed
higher by 0.14% at 42,136 points (IBV/US$ closed up 0.10% at 13,483 points).
Among the blue chips, Telebr s PN/US$ ended down 1.22%. Eletrobr s ended
higher by 0.84%. Petrobr s PN/US$ finished up 0.70%. CVRD PN/US$ closed
lower 0.40%. Usiminas finished up 1.59%. CSN PN/US$ ended lower by 1.47%.

On Friday, for the second time this week, the Central Bank (BC) announced it
conducted another adjustment in the inner-band, this time of 0.04%, allowing the Real
to range between R$1.1360 (floor)/R$1.1410 (ceiling) to the US dollar. The Central
Bank last adjusted the wider-band on January 20, shifting it upward from
US$1.05/US$1.14, where it had been for nearly a year. The US commercial dollar
Ptax ended at R$1.1364/R$1.1356 from R$1.1360/R$1.1352 last Thursday.

Interesting link on the Brazil Financial Wire explaining some details of the privatization model from last November. Basically a rehash of what we know, but interesting reading all the same. The number of resulting companies has since been changed from 13 to 12 as a result of combining two of the cellular companies that were initially defined.
