Erik,

Re Trading software: Since I have a Mac, I'm more limited than the typical guy. I follow real-time data with Investor/Real-Time (Linn Software) and keep my historical stuff with end-of-market downloads and Dow Jones Market Analyser Plus. For optimizations (when I do them), I use Behold.

I used to also subscribe to Hulbert. He changed his format a few years back to where he reviewed only a handful of newsletters in each issue and got more theoretical in discussions. That's not my bag.

I much prefer Independent Investor Digest. There is a website, but I get the fax version. IID tracks the recommendations of 12-15 premium newsletters and then tabulates the stocks in order of consensus preference. They also have a technical analysis commentary and model portfolios which have performed quite well.

My favorite subscription is Ticker Tape Digest, by Leo Fasciocco, columnist for the Investors Business Daily. Very sharp recommendations and targets based on intraday Accumulation/Distribution patterns. That's at www.tickertapedigest.com (of course). Leo has an afternoon password-protected report, but at the site there's also an open report which he updates nightly. It's sort of a distant cousin of the afternoon report, but you can get some idea of the 'relatives' from it.
