In the short term gold stocks usually outperform the metal. During the 29 crash I think Homestake Mining (HM) was the best performing stock. BTW I read the other day where Homestake had a higher rate of return than IBM from like 65-95. I am not sure on the dates but I was very surprised. Gold stocks would offer very good protection but nothing can substitute holding the physical. What happens if the market is shut down for a week or the dollar dramatically declines. My Uncle believes that Gold Stocks will do well because there is a lot of money that must be in the market, such as pension plans etc,. Where will the pros put this money if the market is falling fast for a prolonged period of time? His theory is Gold Stocks.
