Intel's i740 has Tiawan OEMs fearing the mother board..................

Although he does not point this out, it seems ironic that at least some of the companies who are lending their influence to promote Intel's chip may later find their sales adversely affected by motherboards containing the same IC.

Intel has a great deal of influence over motherboard manufacturers, due its ability to withhold or disclose information on forthcoming CPU and chipset developments. The chip giant may use this leverage to encourage the adoption of the i740.

"Intel has a lot of control in this market," added Mr Wang of Britek. "They may force motherboard companies to buy the i740 along with the chipset."

Intel is a leading motherboard manufacturer, and if the price is attractive enough to buyers, it can put any chip it wants on its boards.

Prominent motherboard manufacturer Asustek will be showing a Pentium II motherboard with integrated i740 chip at this year's Computex Taipei show in June. The company also is developing an i740-based graphics card.
