I think I just stumbled across the answer to my own question - American Depository Receipt...? Is this what you are talking about and if so, how do they work?

Please excuse my ignorance but what does ADR stand for?

American Depository Receipt - they're the form that most (all?) foreign shares trade in New York - they are a bundle (4 I think) of the foreign shares. As you can see I'm also learning this stuff.
