I agree with Alok.
As to selling too early, I remember hearing that
a very famous investor(can't remember the name)said
he got wealthy by always selling too early.
I agree that we should try to keep our gains (Jim Roberts
says that the most important part of investing is not
losing and let compounding take care of you).
If you are concerned, you can stay fully invested and
short the Dow, S&P 500, or any other Index. Just don't
do it on heavy margin or you could get a margin call.
If you are investing for the long term (and if you are not,
you are merely speculating), stop buying for a while but don't
sell a single share. If it dips(which it will sooner or later),
you can buy more. If not come back in at a higher point. But
you are not liable for taxes or commissions(the real culprits
for lower returns).
