Interesting. I notice that we don't talk about the different freq bands used in NA vs the rest of the world. That not an issue anymore with smart card technology and microelectronics' namely DSP. Europe was smart to have set down years ago and hammer out a European standard. It only makes sense to do so. In some respects it a legacy of AMPS. Here in the US you go anywhere with an analog phone and pay roamer charges. The only time it didn't work is if a particular operator didn't want the hassle, but the phone was more than capable.

It also understates the problem of migration from analog to digital here in the US.
As I have stated from time to time, path calculation for Digital is far different than for analog. The fact that Europe had a fractured analog system, a unified digital was a natural. However, if I'm travelling for vacation, I don't want no stinking phone!!! Business is another matter.

It also understates the true difference between the two continents, mainly wired vs wireless infrastucture. US wired structure is still far superior at this point in time. However, now that Europe has dereg and privatized it's PTT, watch out. It kind of intriguing in alot of regards to watch the two converging and growing.
