Re: Maxtor, WDC, HMTT

I thought the following information was posted somewhere before. Anyway, I recently read from an analyst report, citing that "Compaq and IBM were ... 10% customers and WD's ten largest customers represented 54% of sales." (Dell's name wasn't mentioned at all.) Also, "the bulk of WD's shipments in the March quarter are expected to come from the 1.3GB per disk program." "Maxtor announced a 2.8GB per disk desktop MR disk drive ... with volume shipments in the March/April timeframe... Maxtor continues to be very aggressive with OEM accounts and ... may show dramatic sequential unit growth as WD continues to struggle with its 2.1GB per disk program."

I'm sorry that I can't post the original stock reports (dated 2/24/98) as I fear violating copyright law. But there's reason why the First Call consensus estimate is -0.44/sh for WDC whereas both SEG and QNTM are predicted to be around breaking even.

BTW, HMTT is the only DD player predicted to post significant profit this quarter. Maybe that's the reason why HMTT is relatively attractive in this lagging business.
