Intel Investors - Pentium II Notebook Benchmarks look Very Impressive

Ziff Davis has already tested three 266 MHz Pentium II Notebook PCs and they are significantly faster than 266 MHz Pentium MMX notebook PCs (Tillamook).

There were no 233 MHz Pentium II notebooks tested.

A 233 MHz K6 notebook is included for reference - but it is at a severe speed disadvantage to the 266 MHz Pentium II's - and is significantly slower. The 233 MHz K6 is a little slower than a 233 MHz Dell notebook PC (except in CPUMARK 32 where the K6 is just slightly faster), also included for reference.

Gateway Wins Pentium II War

In the notebook wars, the portables with Intel's new mobile Pentium
II are the ones to beat. And among the first round of combatants to
use the 266-MHz version of the chip, Gateway 2000's Solo 9100
LS has taken the hill and its opponent's flag. This laptop has every
conceivable option, including a DVD-ROM drive and NTSC
video-capture capability, as well as stunning benchmark
performance. But top-of-the-line equipment comes at a high price:
$4,399. We tested a beta unit under Windows 95.

The Solo 9100 LS soars on our benchmark tests. The Solo's
Business Winstone 98 score of 18.8 beats the 18.2 posted by
Dell's Inspiron 3200 M266XT (see previous review), and the Solo's
CPUmark32 score of 692 and FPU WinMark 98 score of 1,370
essentially equaled those of the Dell. However, the Solo's Business
Graphics WinMark 98 score of 101 is what really sets the Solo
9100 LS apart from the competition. On this test, this notebook was
17% faster than the Inspiron and 35% faster than Transmonde's
Vivante SE (see the next review). The Solo's Business Disk
WinMark 98 score of 930 also beat the Inspiron's second-place
mark of 910. Battery life measured 2 hours 87 minutes.

Gateway has thoroughly
loaded the Solo 9100. This
laptop has 32MB of SDRAM
and a 4GB hard disk. Trident's
new 3D-capable Cyber9397
graphics accelerator with 4MB
of SGRAM drives the large
14.1-inch TFT LCD panel. For
improved DVD playback performance, the system includes a
C-Cube Ziva-DS hardware DVD/MPEG2 decoder. Taking a cue
from Digital, Gateway includes a combined 8X/20X
DVD-ROM-and-floppy disk drive module that uses a single spindle.
This lets you access both the DVD-ROM and the floppy disk drives
simultaneously from the same bay. A 56K x2 modem with cellular
phone jack rounds out this all-in-one system. Unfortunately, all this
capability comes at the cost of increased weight. With its 12-cell
lithium ion battery and charging unit, the Solo 9100 LS weighs in at
a hefty 9.4 pounds.

The Gateway 2000 Solo 9100 LS presents the best of the latest
advances in notebooks. Its performance is superb and its feature
list extensive. However, the Solo's price and weight are steep
enough to make you think twice. --Michael J. Zulich

Pentium II Bests Pentium, K6 Doesn't

Intel's newest CPU for notebook computers, the 266-MHz mobile
Pentium II processor, offers a huge performance boost over the
266-MHz mobile Pentium processor. Gateway's Solo 9100 LS, the
fastest Pentium II laptop we tested, outperformed Digital's HiNote
VP745, the fastest Pentium laptop we've ever seen, by 15% on
Business Winstone 98 and 36% on CPUmark32. The AMD
233-MHz K6 mobile CPU at the heart of the WinBook XL K6 falls
short of Pentium-based laptops.

Longer bars indicate better performance.

All tests were run under Windows 95 at a resolution of 1,024 by 768
