So many postings on this thread express great optimism about the near-term for Oracle. I see lots of predictions of big upside after the conference call on 4/2. I'm not so sure. Oracle faces some tough issues right now and it remains to be seen how well they'll handle them.

The relative low growth rate in applications is due to the extremely high growth of last year (nearly 100% ?), Next year we will see high growth rate again due to this year's low growth, since the growth rate is calculated relative to the previous year.

I have said this for a while now. SAP. PeopleSoft, BAAN, etc. are looking for databases other than Oracle to work with. Since Oracle is a direct competitor they don't wish to feed Oracle's database business.

A large number of companies are moving toward NT as their platform of choice. The move to NT has brought MSFT SQL Server into the ERP database space. MSFT is actively going after this market space.

Also, PeopleSoft and BAAN recently announced certification on the latest ERP versions for Sybase's Adaptive Server Enterprise 11.9. ASE 11.9 has the previously missing row-level locking capabilities with Sybase. I understand that the performance numbers for both BAAN and PeopleSoft are much better than Oracle's. I have no documentation to support this though.
