you compared AOL's network to accessing a *local* ISP. what about the nationwide ISPs like those from the telcos, earthlink, ibm, etc.? Do they have distributed servers all across the country? Or a single access point like AOL?

Distributed POPs and servers all around the world. It's the nature of the Internet to be distributed.
