I admit it is a tough question, since your general statement about film and analog technology being a pretty mature and low margin technology captures their problem. But buying SGI is just too expensive and dangerous (one profitable quarter out of the last 9.)

How about developing a digital version of the medical products and using their existing x-ray film marketing structure, where they do have a clear advantage? In fact, they have a name and several service and marketing networks, which they need to convert to digital technology. Buying Cray doesn't seem like the way to do it.

The other approach is to cut fat and make their current business more profitable, which is never the high growth route. That may be their strategy, in the end. Remember, everyone thought that retailing was a dead end until WalMart came along and did it just a little bit better... and grew into a giant.

Suggestions?
