Duncan, general school funding is NOT tied to the school lunch program funding. They are two separate concepts. Within the school district, there is a food service division, which makes breakfasts and lunches for children. For the food that is provided to the poor children, the district gets financial support. As I understand it, they also get surplus foods, from our agricultural abundance. Could you show me your source materials for school officials being filled out by school officials? To me this sounds like very right wing propaganda. One of the things the right does is take something that happened once or twice, say that it is widespread, and justify depriving people of something very essential, like food for starving children, because of it. For example, "welfare queens" were used to turn the tide against welfare. In fact, almost all people on welfare were truly very poor and trying to survive. Even though I agree with welfare reform, I do not think those tactics are ethical. It is easy to tar a whole group of people with a wide brush, and I think is unfair. The school lunch forms are quite complex, requiring documentation from the parents, and information only they would have. I am pretty sure they are signed under penalty of perjury. It would be very time consuming, and utterly fraudulent, for school officials to fill them out. I really doubt it happens very often. I don't really care, however. As I said before, the school lunch program is a very, very small expenditure in a very wealthy country. To me, it is immoral not to feed children. Even in the event that school officials all over America are falsifying these forms, which I think is a ludicrous proposition, the fact is that children are hungry, and deserve to be fed so that they can learn, which is the only process with a reasonable hope of getting them out of poverty--a good education. I note that you did not address my question--how can a Christian defend allowing innocent children to go hungry?
