Good morning Frank, Consumer PC Business Booms Aaron Goldberg, Executive Vice President Computer Intelligence Despite all the cries from vendors with wounded stocks, the simple fact is there's nothing wrong with demand in the U.S. consumer PC business. It has been an interesting first quarter. First comes Compaq, warning Wall Street that revenues won't meet expectations due to a slump in demand. Then comes Intel, singing the same tune. Meanwhile, Dell pipes up that demand looks fine. So what's up? I say don't bet against Michael Dell. Amid lots of speculation, new data from InfoBead Insider (which measures actual sales from the stores) indicates the consumer PC business is up almost 40% from last February. Why does demand continue to be so strong? Clearly the Christmas rush factors in -- but why has it lasted through February? The big reason, in my opinion, is that with a combination of lower pricing and non-stop marketing activities, vendors are keeping the market hot. Compaq may have miscalculated its inventory situation and caused its own revenue hiccup, but its free monitor program has only added to the numerous inducements to get customers into the stores. The other piece of big news from the retail front is that Hewlett-Packard has passed Packard Bell for the No. 2 position. But before you write off PB, we've seen this kind of share blip in the past where PB has had a rotten month and bounced back. So let's focus on HP. For a company that was an unfeared entrant into the consumer PC business, it's done pretty darn well. The new product line is highly price competitive and feature sets are on a par, if not better than Compaq's for some SKUs. And it still has the best ads going. The U.S. consumer PC business rushes forward. Vendors may be tearing their hair out, but buyers are the winners.
