qdog:

Marketing is marketing. Ericsson wants to plant as much GSM as possible while holding out the olive branch of W-CDMA as a long-term migration path. You're absolutely right about CDMA being CDMA. W-CDMA is not some magical reinvention of the technology; it's little more than tweaked IS-95 and it's probably less then IS-95C. But you don't expect the mighty Ericsson to tell its customers the truth do you? Let's see..to paraphase Tero..I would expect the ERICY press release to go something like this:

STOCKHOLM, Sweden--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 31, 1998--Ericsson today announced that it plans to deploy Qualcomm's IS-95 technology under the alternative appellation of W-CDMA. After deceiving customers for several years about the relative merits of TDMA-based GSM, Ericsson has determined that the facade is no longer in its self-interest. Therefore, the company will immediately make the newer and superior CDMA technology available to its customers.

In order to protect its installed base, and maximize forward profitability, Ericsson has created a proprietary form of CDMA which is ideally suited to migrate the company's existing GSM customers. Although the benefits are largely illusory, Ericsson believes that its marketing propaganda will assuage customers' concerns about the technology transition despite the complete absence of tangible collateral benefit.

Ericsson's W-CDMA will provide superior voice quality, extended battery life and capacity gains of 10x to 12x analog (3x to 4x superior to GSM). In contrast, Qualcomm's IS-95 still does not work become of timing problems related to phases of the moon.

Ericsson's 100,000 employees are active in more than 130 countries. Their combined expertise in fixed and mobile networks, mobile phones and infocom systems makes Ericsson a world-leading supplier in telecommunications. Plus, we always tell the truth :-)
