Just found this thread, and am in need of advice. In 1997 I received a signing bonus for a new job. I do not start working for the firm until August of 98. I received a 1099 Misc from the company. No taxes were withheld from the bonus. My question is: Do I have to pay Social Security on the Bonus or is it considered unearned income? The back of the 1099 just says that if you are NOT self employed (which I am not) then to add the bonus to your wages salaries tips etc. It does not mention anything about paying social security. Any advice or input would be appreciated.
