RESEARCH ALERT - Lucent seen outperformer

NEW YORK, March 31 (Reuters) - Morgan Stanley said on Tuesday it reiterated its outperform rating on shares of Lucent Technologies Inc.

-- ''We checked in with our wireless component supplier contacts for Lucent's wireless business regarding the March quarter outlook,'' analyst Alkesh Shah said.
''We now believe that Lucent's PCS customers may not slow spending until 1999.''

-- Checks indicate U.S. PCS spending by Lucent's customers has not slowed down and should be strong for the March quarter, Shah said.

-- Sprint Corp's (FON - news) spending has accelerated due to higher-than-expected minutes of use and faster-than-expected subscriber growth, Shah said.
