I worked for Project HeadStart in my hometown while I was in college. There were many children in that program who benefited from both the free meals and the educational preparation but also in the class were two children of college professors. I still don't understand how or why they were there. It was a free babysitting program for them and there is no justification that I can see for our feeding the children of people who made more than my parents and whose education level was higher than that of the teachers.

In this world there are those who will take whatever they can get with no compunction and with feelings of entitlement that most of us can't comprehend. There will always be the family defrauding the welfare program and driving a Cadillac. There are the tax evaders, and doctors who take money to lie about injuries, and what about those terrible people who throw their garbage bags on the side of the road?

Sometimes the balance between compassion for the truly needy and fury at the dishonest and greedy is very difficult to maintain, but I agree with you that the one program where we at least know the direct beneficiaries are children is the last on my list for cutback. We need to be wary of becoming so hardened by our exposure to the cheaters and abusers, that we lose sight of the good that these programs can accomplish...and there is good. But, oh, how mad I get when I think about those professors.
