LOL. Well, this battle with the revisionists is long lost: my second edition of Fowler's (1926!) has an interesting article on the phenomenon, of which he disapproves. But the 3d edition points out that from the 16th century onwards, we have used 'they' in reference to a single noun; it concludes "the process now seems irreversible".
