TELEWEST'S DIGITAL PLANS ANNOUNCED SOON

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Telewest is expected to give details of its plans for the transition to digital sometime in April. The indications are that it will choose a one-company end-to-end system using software tools from a variety of suppliers. If the indications given last year are followed the main hardware supplier will be General Instrument.
Telewest has already undertaken feasibility trials in southern and western England. It plans to start final trials before the end of this year with a full consumer launch in 1999.
Cable & Wireless Communications has already announced its plans for a digital launch towards the end of the year using a General Instrument system.
