My understanding of the whole affair...

...is that Sony is going to use for their ASICs the same microprocessor cores from Hitachi as VLSI does. Thats probably bad news, because the Sony/Fujitsu alliance in ASCIC development and production is likely to compete with VLSI with similar hardware. Its also bad news for LSI Logic, as LSI might loose Sony as customer, because Sony can eventually produce its own ASICs (e. g. for the PlayStation). LSI, by the way, uses a MIPS processor core for their ASICs.
Does anyone know which core is better, has more perspectives etc., the Hitachi breed or the MIPS piece? May be important to look at this aspect...
