I guess I'm not making my point.
HeadStart is a federally funded program designed to help even out the playing field before school begins. There is so much evidence that economically disadvantaged children are not developmentally or intellectually equal to middleclass children entering kindergarten that this program was developed to try to give them some of the educational nurturing taht they've missed. I was not saying that professors make enough money to live luxuriously, or that they don't deserve more(though I would argue they make enough to feed and support a family) but that their children are not the ones for whom this particular program is designed. The cost to the government is far more than a peanut butter sandwich a day. To me it is irresponsible to take advantage of something that I don't really need at someone else's expense.
Don't you think there is a trade-off when one enters teaching? They may not make six figures, but they have tenure and they don't work anywhere close to the kind of hours a corporate executive does. it's a trade-off Dan and I used to discuss a lot. We chose money. heehee.
