My mother's attitude about breakfast bordered on child abuse. Every morning we had to eat a soft boiled egg or we couldn't leave the dining room table. Now luckily I have a very strong stomach. I can ride Tilt-a-Whirls and Octopi and Scramblers for hours and never get queasy so I stuffed mine down pretty easily on a piece of toast. But my poor brother, he of the delicate sensibilities, couldn't even look at them. You know those little stringy things they have sometimes? (my RoseannaDannaDanna voice)Like little phlegmy things that would have been the chicken if you'd let it stay where it was supposed to? And sometimes they even had a little blood on them?
If he got one of those he'd throw up. And my mother was always rushing so we got them a lot. It got so he'd look at the egg, and start gagging and run from the table. And she'd still make him come back and eat it.
She had this belief that if we didn't eat an egg every morning, terrible things would happen to us. Like-dying of anaemia before we got to school or failing because we didn't have the strength to hold a pencil or something.
My kids eat cereal.
