Zenith Warns Bankruptcy Possible

By CLIFF EDWARDS

CHICAGO (AP) - Zenith Electronics Corp., whose bulky television sets once adorned millions of American homes, warned today it may be forced into bankruptcy as it continues to hemorrhage red ink.

Zenith's stock plunged $1.87 1/2, or 27 percent, to $4.75 a share in early trading on the New York Stock Exchange.

The suburban Glenview, Ill.-based company today reported yet another quarterly loss - this time of $155.7 million - and announced it was undertaking what could be a last-ditch restructuring to bring down its costs.

A spokesman did not immediately return messages seeking comment on whether layoffs were inevitable.
