WHAT: WaveTop launches Home PC Broadcast Service to Top 50 markets --
covering two-thirds of the U.S. -- while expanding to entire

news and information, the free, ad-supported service, when fully
launched, will reach 99 percent of all U.S. households using the
signals of 264 television stations in the PBS network.

WaveTop's high-speed service is backed by a coalition of nearly 50
leading digital media, computer, and software companies. In
addition, Microsoft will include WaveTop data broadcast software in
its Windows 98 operating system, giving users who have PCs equipped
with TV tuner boards the ability to receive Internet content
without incurring access costs or tying up telephone lines.

What do you think of my ranting

I'm a bit peeved at WAVO right now, for misleading
us till now. Please help me determine if my concerns
are justified, or ridiculous.

1. VBI speed was earlier billed as faster than ISDN (>128kb/sec), and now we hear it's only running at 14.4 kb/sec with the "promise" of a doubling of that by years end.

2. Earlier we read claims of 99% penetration of the PBS stations in North America. Now we hear of ONLY 50 stations, and speculation of signal restrictions with CableTV based input.

3. We read of dozens of Content providers signing up, when the truth is, you are really getting a few publishing companies peddling their newstand offerings electronically.

4. Now we hear speculation that WaveTop may be giving away ad space in trade for favors I'm sure they're getting from access providers and other cooperative partners.

5. While PointCast is a different type of system, it's strikes me as odd that this push provider problems do not reflect badly on WaveTop, while PointCast is restructuring from revenue shortfalls.

6. We are basking in the warm glow of MicroSoft's support, but don't think for one second that MSFT is doing WAVO any favors. To Mr.Bill WaveTop is just another gimmick they hope will help sell Windows'98.

I wonder if that persistant 1-mil+ short position may be right. Oh, I'll certainly bet that with all the hype between 4/6 thru 6/25 we'll have plenty of good upside days, but when the dust settles, this VBI venture may not turn a profit until they lose the exclusivity to other networks like ABC, NBC, & CBS who can just do the same thing on their networks, and those guys have International penetration!

Forgive me... I'm just pissed I did'nt think of buying HAUP instead instead of WAVO.
