Papows says the idea was to make a run for market share, getting more users by making Notes cheaper. But those at Lotus didn't know how receptive IBM would be to the idea, especially coming from newly initiated leaders.

Papows still recalls how IBM's Gerstner and Thompson listened to the idea and looked him straight in the eye.
