New SKorea union leader says he will call national strikes in 1-2 mths

SEOUL (AFX-ASIA) - The newly elected president of the Korea Confederation
of Trade Unions said he will call nationwide strikes in one or two months to
defend job security.
Lee Kap-Yong, a labor leader at Hyundai Heavy Industries Co Ltd, won the
KCTU presidency late Tuesday.
He said he will organize the strikes in protest over widespread
retrenchment amid South Korea's economic crisis.
"After finishing the reorganization of the hierarchy of the KCTU, we will
stage nationwide strikes in a month or two to win job security and to protect
our right to life," Lee told a news conference.
He said the government and employers have reneged on a tripartite
agreement struck in January, and workers are taking on a disproportionate
share of sacrifices while the chaebol have been slow in implementing reforms.
