>>I never understood why Zip was getting so popular when one had CD-R all along. At least now I understand why Zip is going out of favor.<<

Well, until now I don't think CD-R has slowed Zip's growth that much (I haven't seen a system yet with CD-R standard, and few optional even), but with CD-R that cheap it could be a factor in the future.

James,

I think you're comparing Apples with Oranges. CD-R and CD-R/W will only compete with CD-ROM. The Zip was introduced to replace the floppy drive and all the valuable uses it provided.
Exchanging files that no longer fit on a floppy (multi-media
type). I still can see giving someone a 650mb media with only 50-
100Mb of data on it. Once new price points arrive for the Zip this
will become obvious.
Emergency boot disk for all operating systems(including Windows NT)
which is not possible with a 3.5 diskette
Archiving important documents to offsite storage
Transfering files from work to home to name a few
I still feel strongly about the need for Tape Media (Backup/Archive),
Floppy drive (ZIP), and (CD-ROM, CD-R, CD-R/W). All these devices have a place in my heart and PC.

I have a Zip at home and work and a JAZ2 on orderrrrrrrrrr
