Crash proofing your computer

I may have solved (knock on wood) my modem crash problem. I got the recommendation from somewhere in the Internet Sea. To stop the "hang" when I sign off the web I make sure there is NO activity through the modem. I close all applications but one browser. I then go to a web site (SI works if you are a member) that has no advertising. I load a few pages to condense? (defragment??) the RAM (my own addition, do not know if it makes a difference or not) and then disconnect the modem using the modem disconnect button rather than the browser.

I haven't had a system freeze during disconnect for two weeks. It used to happen on a regular basis.

Good reading in the April edition of BYTE on system crashes
