I believe it came from the Irish who always thought that someone or some thing was out to get them.ie. the goverment, the Brits someone's husband,etc.etc.

I, too, am a Heinz 57, including English, German, Irish, Jewish, and American Indian.

I ran down a reference to "black Irish" once, but cannot vouch for the accuracy of the info.

It seems that crew from the Spanish Armada when it was destroyed by the English made their way to Ireland. Their descendants are known as the "Black Irish".

I'm also "Black Dutch", whatever that means.
