The tender for digital telecoms equipment

Brazil - SABI via NewsEdge Corporation : The
migration from analogic to digital cellular telephone
(Band A)= technology has triggered a war of the
major players to win the Brazilian= telecoms
equipment market looking for the current 4mil
cellular lines in= Brazil of which only 100,000 digital
lines. One of the issues at stake is= the adoption of
CDMA or TDMA technology, a move to be defined
by the= tenders for additional terminals being held
by Telerj and Telesp. BCP= consortium that initially
invested R$300mil to operate cellular services= in
Band B at the Grand Sao Paulo area has adopted
TDMA technology and= selected Nortel as its
supplier. BSE consortium that is investing
R$450mil= over the next three years to operates
Band B services at area 10 (Piaui,= Alagoas, Ceara,
Rio Grande do Norte, Paraiba, and Pernambuco)
and = Americel that is investing R$750mil over the
next three years and is= operating cellular services
in in area 7 (Brasilia, Goias, Tocantins, Mato=
Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Rondonia, Acre) has
also adopted the same= technology and supplier.
Several operators of Band A services, all=
subsidiaries of Telebras slated for privatization in
1998, are keen to= CMDA technology when shifting
to digital. One of them is Telebahia, that = is being
supplied by NEC, through a R$16mil contract for
25,000 digital= terminals until October, and
additional 35,000 until end 1998. Maxitel=
consortium, that won the license for Band B services
in area 9 (Bahia,= Sergipe states) is to use TDMA
technology and is investing R$200mil
