I suspect MSFT is doing this as a hedge and it's probably a fall out of work being done on NT.

Gary, I think you're right on target. It makes sense to be able to support as many protocols as possible in a server environment. ATM as an entry point to a server over a high speed DSL connection,(or T1 or T3 for that matter if QoS is important) into a business makes sense. Of course, the server, acting as bridge and/or router puts the data on the E'net for distribution to the desktops.
