Richard,

Most brokerages hold your stock in your margin account... even if it's not bought on margin. That way they can loan it out, sell it, or do whatever they choose. You must instruct them to put it in your "cash account". That's assuming you didn't buy it on margin. It can't be loaned out to a short if it's in a cash account. I suggest you do it if it's in a margin account. Took me less than a minute and that's a few thousand less shares the shorts can get hold of.
